My Opinion On An Opinion Article

The link to the opinion article is here.

The article is mainly about the Latino influence in Obama's votes that contributed to his victory, and how Latinos may change the schooling system forever. It is stated in the article that Latinos have the highest dropout rate among every race. With past experience at an Alternative school for former high school dropouts, writer of the article Ray Salazar, explains the reason behind the what may be changes to the schooling systems. Ray argues that forcing students to stay in school until they're 18 isn't putting students first- he believes that doing this creates insurmountable situations. Ray also believes that the traditional six-to-eight classes for four years must change.
Ray Salazar states that teachers are most likely blamed for Latino student's lack of achievement, and most often Latino parents are blamed for their own student's lack of achievement. He explains that the reason behind this is that a student in a building for six-to-seven hours a day, schools should be able to show a change in academic or behavioral change in almost every student.
Lastly, Ray demands that all students-Latino or not-should have to option of attending whatever school they choose.

Honestly, I don't agree with Ray Salazar, the reason being that even though the amount of school hours and environments may not fit the students wishes, it is the student's obligation and responsibility to do good in school-because in the end it only affects themselves based on how well they did in school and how much you personally achieve.

  1. Great job Jacob. I agree with your comment about it being the student's "obligation and responsibility" to do well in school. Very mature viewpoint.
